Overprotected fue escrita y producida por Max Martin y Rami Yacoub para el tercer álbum de estudio de Britney, titulado, Britney. Es una canción que habla sobre una chica que está cansada de ser manipulada por las personas a su alrededor y no necesita que le digan lo que tiene que hacer. La canción tienen una duración de 3:18 minutos. Britney hizo varias presentaciones en vivo de esta canción, además de formar parte de las giras Dream Within A Dream Tour en el 2001 y en The Onyx Hotel Tour en el 2004.
